This is the same idea behind binary search. In a sorted array, you compare against the middle element and eliminate half the remaining candidates. In a quadtree, you choose one of four quadrants and ignore the other three regions. Each level narrows the search space by a factor of four instead of two.
As part of their research, they have put together a set of proposed improvements for Node.js' Web streams implementation that will eliminate promises in certain code paths which can yield a significant performance boost up to 10x faster, which only goes to prove the point: promises, while useful, add significant overhead.
